Radar Backscatter Measurements From RADARSAT S A R Imagery of South Pole Station , Antarctica

چکیده
Ice Sheet backscatter around South Pole Station was measured from several different azimuthal angles using RADARSAT-1 S A R data. We observed strong azimuthal anisotropy (3-4 dB) between radar look directions across and along the prevailing wind direction. We speculate that the azimuthal variation of backscatter around the South Pole area may be largely attributed to systematically oriented sastrugi and buried sastrugi. Radar backscatter is well correlated with surface topography over a spatial wavelength band of 15 to 20 km. We propose that grain size variations control backscatter patterns associated with undulating surface topography *

Bedrock topography and wind erosion sites in East Antarctica: observations from the 2002 US-ITASE traverse
Ice stratigraphy from deep-penetrating radar data collected during the 2002 US International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (US-ITASE) traverse shows evidence of a significant erosion surface and drift-filled basin related to a previously undiscovered 1400m subglacial mountain between Hercules Dome (878420 S, 1088W) and South Pole. The 3MHz radar profile crosses three subglacial mountain...
متن کاملLow-Backscatter Ocean Features in Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery
any ocean surface signatures in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery are characterized by relatively low normalized radar cross section values. Distinguishing among these signatures objectively can be very difficult, especially with only the singleband and single-polarization SAR imagery available from the European Remote Sensing satellites and the Canadian Radarsat-1. Nevertheless, distincti...
متن کاملA time marker at 17.5 kyr BP detected throughout West Antarctica
Deep radar soundings as part of the International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (US-ITASE) traverses in West Antarctica have revealed a bright internal reflector that we have imaged throughout widespread locations across the ice sheet. The layer is seen in traverses emanating from Byrd Station in four directions and has been traced continuously for distances of 535 km toward the Weddell...
متن کاملRadar Reflectance Model for the Extraction of Height from Shape from Shading Technique
The shape-from-shading (SFS) technique deals with the recovery of shape of an object through a gradual variation of shading encoded in the image. Most SFS approaches have assumed Lambertian surface to extract DEM from individual images. The quality of the derived DEM from radar SFS in particular, depends on the appropriate radar reflectance model, which relates the radar backscatter to the surf...

[1] Satellite data are important for providing the large-scale context of the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) station and for characterizing the spatial variability of the sea ice in its vicinity. The Canadian RADARSAT satellite collected 195 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of the SHEBA site over the course of the 1 year drift. The RADARSAT Geophysical Processor System (RG...
